THEORY FOR THE MODERN COMPOSER

Don’t just blindly follow the rules, master the rules

ScoreClub delivers extremely thorough, academic-level knowledge of theory adapted for modern composers, created by a working composer. Theory for the 21st Century so you can write music.

  • Build a rock-solid foundation of complete knowledge, no shortcuts.
  • Learn how, when and why to use the rules and remove doubts so you can write with control and confidence.
  • Every rule is treated as sound and effect so they become colours you paint with.

“I studied harmony and counterpoint at Uni and for the first time I understand musical reasons for the rules…and it’s so exciting!”

– Rob Kelly

“There is so much content in all your videos… I cannot thank you enough”

– Dawayne King

I’m learning a ridiculous amount – the courses are so full of information I have to pause the video every 30 seconds to take notes! They’re phenomenal.”

– Matt Clarke

CLARITY: THE FIRST STEP TO MASTERY

Through highly structured courses, expert pacing, supporting examples and exercises, the ScoreClub courses included in your membership help you achieve clarity as you ingrain the material into your musical thinking.

Images taken from the courses

Expert instruction from a master teacher and composer

“An absolute gold mine of information and clarity. In one sentence, you can answer so many questions that continuously plague my mind (some of which I could never articulate) and I am forever grateful for your fantastic teachings.”

– Simon Charles Hanna

Every subject is broken down into easy-to-digest elements, and then presented in a logical, cumulative progression

“… brilliantly presented, very practical and inspiring. There’s a great cumulative effect with each progressive lesson of ‘oh – there’s that idea/technique/rule again!’ so when I reached the end of the course, score-reading suddenly seemed like a much more focused and clear exercise.

– Richard Wilkinson

On-screen writing demonstrations, musical examples and exercises to reinforce and absorb the material into your writing

“Alain uses a really unique method of writing and thinking through the process as he teaches. He shares the “thought process” he goes through while writing (which is so much more valuable than just presenting steps and rules). Tremendous value.

– Gregory D. Moore

SKILL & TECHNIQUE: SECOND STEP TO MASTERY

“It’s not because you see it that you can do it.”

Alain Mayrand

Knowledge without application doesn’t lead anywhere. “Apply, apply, apply” is the ScoreClub battle cry and every lesson is designed for you to take that knowledge and build the skill that translates directly to your writing.

Your ScoreClub membership gives you the complete road-map to achieve the skill and technique you need through precisely designed exercises and drills that…

  • Reinforce what you learn and ingrain it into your musical thinking
  • Guide you towards proper methodology and creative mindset
  • Develop golden-age level technique to free your creative thought

I think it’s unparalleled. It’s like the bench press, deadlift and squats in the composition world – exercises that give results!””

– Johannes R.

“…I can see the whole point of your approach and it actually works… My brain is free from a terrible frustration now, thanks for this!””

– Jeremie Friez

“Without craftsmanship, inspiration is a mere reed shaken in the wind.”

Johannes Brahms

MUSICIANSHIP: THE DIRECT LINE TO YOUR CREATIVITY

Build a direct line to your musical ideas

If your goal is to write the type of natural, organic, fluid music of the greats like Ravel, Debussy, Tchaikovsky, John Williams (which is our goal here at SC) then musicianship is not an option, it’s part of the complete picture.

This includes these simple elements: Pencil, paper, your ear and a keyboard.

This is still by far the best and fastest way for you to see how everything fits together and be in control of every detail of your music. That is what we use with ScoreClub courses.

This is also the key to increase the quality of your writing and how fast you get to your ideas by building a direct link to your musical ideas and getting your fingers or technology out of the way.

The concepts and practices have immediate musical application. You will walk away with efficient techniques that will guide your creative process and keep you writing without getting stuck wondering where to go next. Highly recommended for composers at any level!

LEARN TO THINK LIKE A COMPOSER

Stand on the Shoulders of Giants

ON-SCREEN WRITING DEMONSTRATIONS WITH INVALUABLE INSIGHTS BY A WORKING COMPOSER

Alains’ courses are by far the most useful, well laid out and enjoyable that I have ever come across. Having a direct insight into Alain’s process is absolutely invaluable.

I was able to immediately apply his teaching to cues that I was working on with great success. What more can you ask for?”

Jake Fader Composer
(Romeo is Bleeding, Abstract: the Art of Design)

EXERCISES DESIGNED TO BUILD PROPER METHODOLOGY AND CREATIVE MINDSET

“The methodology you teach, and the thought process you repeat, teaches me what to think about constantly and what is really important during composition. Your real-world experience shows through the videos and inspires me.”

Eric

LEARN TO COMBINE BOTH KNOWLEDE AND INTUITION EFFECTIVELY

“I absolutely LOVE this course! It has really helped me to become ‘unstuck’ when writing. Before, I always had to wait for inspiration to write any little thing. After the course, I am able to focus on the smaller details and relationships which then evolve into a larger idea almost on auto-pilot.

The idea of the logical part of the brain ‘kickstarting’ the creative part of your brain when it doesn’t see where to go next is astounding…

ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR

Learn from a working composer and orchestrator

Alain is a film and concert composer, orchestrator and conductor whose credits include Elysium, Ender’s Game and the upcoming animated feature Mosley.

A trained composer (M.mus), Alain is passionate about high-level craftsmanship in composition at the level of the golden-age composers.

He created the ScoreClub membership to share his passion and what he’s learned, believing that it’s important to send the elevator back down and create the type of teaching he wished he had as a student and early in his career.

“You’re going to hear this over and over again from many people, but I’ll say it anyway – You’re the teacher we WISH we had many years ago”

– Paul Grecco

“putting in the time to learn from this master is well worth the effort.”

– Max Tofone

Alain is a very talented teacher. Being a good composer does not mean a person can explain how to compose. Alain has both the ability to compose, and the ability to teach.

Paul McGraw

LEARNING BEYOND TEXTBOOKS

Get teaching that textbooks don’t have and get results

ScoreClub courses provide the type of learning that textbooks can’t give and makes it immediately usable.

One aspect of Alain’s mission through ScoreClub is to share knowledge he did not find in the textbooks but through his intensive study of the masters.

“ I have virtually every book ever written (…) and it’s better than all my orchestration books. Just the business of adding notes under the melody (in the first course) … can’t find THAT in a book!

– Ed Buller

“I love the OTL courses they really opened up my mind and have given me an understanding of orchestration like a music degree and dozens of orchestration books never did! Every single book is “here’s the range of the flute” or “here’s a balanced chord in the strings” and that’s about it.”

– Ryan Leach

THE SCORECLUB COURSES

“…it’s these types of classes that are going to allow us to take our writing to the next level.”

Wayne B.

I want to also tell you that you are bar none one of the best teachers I have ever come across whether that be through books, online courses or schooling. Your passion and enthusiasm for the material, as well as your thoroughness in presentation really shines through. You also inspire and excite one to go the extra mile and become a better composer in every sense. It’s all there in every one of your courses.

I can’t thank you enough for these courses, they are second to none and worth every penny (but really much more.)!

BUT ISN’T WRITING MUSIC ON PAPER OUTDATED AND SLOW?

No! Writing music on paper leads to clarity and real skill, you will control what you do at a level that is very hard to do any other way. This will translate perfectly to your DAW and playing and that clarity will improve your writing even if you don’t write things down later and go straight to DAW. You will write faster and with more precision and confidence and clarity.
