This course covers concepts to compose well-crafted pieces in two voices like the masters. Designed for the intermediate student, “Practical Counterpoint 2” provides an in-depth look at musical texture, direction and form, and then using masterpieces as models, ends with you writing a collection of short pieces in two-voices.
YOU HAVE LEARNED THE TECHNIQUE OF TWO-VOICE COUNTERPOINT AND NOW IT’S TIME TO WRITE SOME MUSIC. But what gives counterpoint shape and direction? How do you create textural variety with only two voices? How do you make musical decisions and avoid the dry, boring counterpoint that seems to just be an academic exercise without any musical interest?
Practical Counterpoint 2 takes the technique of two-voice counterpoint and takes the next step into writing fully realized, highly crafted short pieces in two voices like the masters.
TWO-VOICES: THE FOUNDATION OF GOOD WRITING
This is NOT a course on contrapuntal technique or species counterpoint.
With Practical Counterpoint 2 you harness your contrapuntal technique through texture, direction and form.
HOW WE HEAR & THINK
The concepts I share in this course are my views built over 20+ years of writing, study and teaching.
The resulting course is a reflection of how people hear music and how composers think. This is not academic or filled with stiff rules.
I also provide many insights into my own thought process during compositional decision-making, with the goal of kick-starting your own understanding and answering the questions you have and maybe even some you haven thought of yet.
The goal is to deepen your understanding of the basics of good writing, and this is done by discussing texture, direction and form in two-voice writing and the work of the Masters.
In this course I cover the parameters of musical texture in a high level of detail, from the lowly single note to the complex interactions of two voices.
This is like colour theory for composers.
And what is covered here will follow you beyond two voices and into every other type of writing.
From my point of view, musical direction is a crucial aspect of compositional thinking and musical perception.
And nowhere is that more true or apparent than in two-voice writing.
This course covers only the forms we will use for the short pieces we use as models: binary and ternary forms.
But more importantly, we cover concepts of forms that are at the core, and we create a deep and flexible understanding of the psychology of form: how we perceive formal structure, what the effects and functions are within a form.
You will gain a flexible view of form so that you can control form rather than having it control you.
As with all ScoreClub courses, you are provided with not only clear explanation of each concept, all of them methodically presented in order, but also clear practice steps to fully assimilate the material into your own writing.
STAND ON THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS
Once those concepts are learned and practiced, it’s time to write some pieces! The approach taken is to model our writing after the masters.
The course includes a collection of 20 short pieces that I collected over the years from great composer like Bach, Telemann and Handel.
You are also guided through a field-tested approach to writing practice so you don’t just copy but assimilate the concepts of each piece and integrate them into your own musical thinking.
I also provide many original examples of lines and counterpoint that are not in a Baroque style to stimulate your ideas.
