COMPOSER EAR TRAINING: DIATONIC

“Composer Ear Training: Diatonic” is ear training for composers who want to be able to write what’s in their head without needing an instrument, or to simply be able to access their ideas with more ease and fluency to their instrument or DAW.

88 STUDENTS ENROLLED

Have you ever wanted the ability to sit down anywhere, pull out a music notepad and write some music without needing an instrument but never thought you could? This course was designed with that goal in mind.

DESIGNED FOR COMPOSERS

This course was designed specifically for composers so you can reach your goal of writing by ear and capture with more clarity what is inside your head.

Through nearly four hours of lessons (3:55 to be exact) you will:

  • Clarify your inner hearing so you can connect to your musical ideas
  • Learn how to hear hierarchy properly so you can find notes with ease
  • Combine various ways of hearing into a usable ear for every day composing
  • Learn to hear lines and harmony
  • Start writing by ear with the first lesson (simply at first with increasing complexity.)

COMPOSE BY EAR FROM THE START

image-5741
This course goes straight to the point: you start composing by ear from the very first lesson.

This is achieved through clear and precise explanations, carefully designed practice steps and a logical, incremental approach to the material.

Nothing is overwhelming and you get to write music from the get go!

LEARN AT YOUR LEVEL

The course was designed to benefit anyone from beginners to more advanced composers who feel their ear is lagging.

The flexible three part practice plan can be easily adapted to your exact level, needs and goals. This is explained in the course.

FOCUS ON WRITING

The focus in the course is on writing to manuscript (so you can go compose at the coffee shop or while taking a stroll in the countryside like Beethoven) but the skills learned can of course be applied to capturing your ideas directly to your instrument or DAW.

HEAR IN MULTIPLE WAYS

This course tackles ear training from various usable angles to make it a powerful, usable ear training system.

This course uses solfège at the core of its program, but combines it with contextual intervallic training, harmonic thinking and melodic grouping to develop a multi-faceted ear that is functional for a composer’s every day work.

ON-SCREEN DEMONSTRATIONS

No more doubts on how writing by ear work. Real-time on-screen writing is the hallmark of ScoreClub lessons, and here you will see Alain writing and providing insights into the thought process so you’ll know exactly how to approach your own work!

CONNECT TO YOUR INNER EAR

An important part of this course, one that is critical for composers, is to develop your inner ear.

With targeted exercises you’ll learn to hear with more clarity what is inside your head, imagine music better and connect with your ideas.

Have you ever had an idea and lost it as soon as you tried to figure it out on the piano? This course develops a way of hearing and methodology to overcome that.

REAL-WORLD WRITING

With nearly 20 years of teaching ear training to beginners all the way to professional composers, you’ll learn techniques based on how we really hear and what really works.

DIATONIC AND BEYOND

This course covers diatonic writing with major and all minor scales. Although there is no chromaticism here, the course was carefully formulated to set the groundwork for modal, chromatic and atonal ear training.

With this approach you build a foundation of skill appropriate for a composer working in film-scores today.

RECOMMENDED PRE-REQUISITES

  • Music rudiments: specifically, major and minor scales, key signatures and triads in all inversions.
